Mecca, Saudi Arabia (CNN) — The path from the holy city of Mecca to the Mina desert turned a sea of white Wednesday as throngs of Muslims began the annual pilgrimage known as the Hajj.
They came from all corners of the Earth to fulfill an obligation — the Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. Those who complete its prescribed rituals are believed to be forgiven for their mortal sins.
But beneath the serene sea of white, beneath the powerful symbol of Muslim unity, lie deep schisms that divide the Islamic world.
The differences go back centuries to Sunnis and Shiites, sects divided at Islam’s inception over the selection of Prophet Mohammed’s successor. Other differences have bubbled up over modern-day issues: the role of women, terrorism and the real meaning of jihad.
A demographic study released last month by the Pew Research Center estimated that there are 1.57 billion Muslims, representing 23 percent of the world’s population. About 2 million of them are in Saudi Arabia for the next five days for the Hajj.

Sectarian conflict has manifested itself this year in a war of words about the pilgrimage between Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia and predominantly Shiite Iran. The Saudi government warned pilgrims not to stage demonstrations.
Iran said it would take “appropriate measures” if Shiite pilgrims faced any interference.
In 1987, 402 people died at the Hajj when troops broke up a Shiite protest.
This year, with tensions heightened by the terse Saudi-Iranian exchange, 100,000 security personnel have been mobilized to keep close watch.

“We heard conflicting messages from Iran, but we appreciate the latest positive messages by Iranian officials visiting the country,” said Prince Naef bin Abdelaziz, Saudi Arabia’s interior minister.
“We hope that no unwanted incidents happen during this Hajj season,” he said.
Many pilgrims said Muslims should not let their differences divide them.
“We do follow our traditions, but there should be more understanding and harmony among all Muslims,” said Motaqi, a Shiite pilgrim.
Zahida, a Sunni, wished for better dialogue between the sects. She wished that Sunnis and Shias could live side by side, as they do during the Hajj.
A Harvard University study found that the Hajj does lead to a sense of greater harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic sects, and to more favorable attitudes toward women, including greater acceptance of female education and employment.
Ilyas Anwar, a young imam from the South Valley Islamic Community in San Martin, California, made the journey of a lifetime to Mecca — for the fourth time.
In general, he said, Muslims stand united, divided perhaps by cultural differences, but not their faith.
That, he said, was apparent from the scene around him. Sunni and Shiite, black and white, Arab and non-Arab wending their way to the desert.

Fact Box
MINA – Muslims symbolically stoned the devil in Mina valley, near Mecca, on Wednesday, launching into the final rituals of the hajj, the world’s largest annual pilgrimage which this year has drawn around 2.8 million devotees.

A day after having focused on throwing pebbles at the Jamarat al-Aqaba, the largest of three adjacent walls representing Satan, pilgrims cast their stones at all three sites.

A storm followed by light rain hit Mina and Mecca in the evening, causing havoc among pilgrims squatted on pavements and in public spaces as their adhoc covers were blown away. Weather forecasts said the rains could last until Friday.

The stoning rituals continue on Thursday before the hajj winds up the following day.
“Thank God. I have fulfilled one of the duties of hajj,” said Ibrahim al-Asaad, 27, from Syria, as he emerged from the Jamarat complex.

“I felt I was really stoning Iblees (an Arabic name for the devil). I felt I was insulting him and declaring that I shall not follow him,” he said.

Iblees in Islamic tradition is a wicked angel who refused Allah’s order to prostrate to his creature, Adam, claiming that being created from fire made him superior to Adam, who was made from the soil.

The angel who fell from grace told God he would work endlessly to divert Adam and his offspring from obeying God. He was kicked out of heaven, along with Adam and Eve, after he convinced them to eat the forbidden fruit, according to Islamic tradition.

“I am keeping him away from me,” said Khalaf Bayoush, 30, from Syria, after he cast pebbles at the three walls representing Iblees.

“Thank God. I fulfilled my duty,” said Yemeni Antar Ahmed, 21.
Crowds surged later in the day as many appeared to follow the prevailing tradition of doing the stoning in the afternoon.

“I cast my stones in the morning. But after I asked scholars they told me that I should repeat,” said Arif al-Shuaibi, 21, from Yemen.

The ritual is an emulation of Ibrahim’s stoning of the devil at the three spots where he is said to have appeared trying to dissuade the biblical patriarch from obeying God’s order to sacrifice his son, Ishmael.

Pilgrims had returned overnight to Mina, a tent town that comes to life only during hajj, from Mecca where they had on Tuesday performed the Tawaf circumambulation around the Kaaba, a cube-shaped stone structure towards which Muslims worldwide face for prayer.

They had also on Tuesday performed Sa’i, going back and forth between the two stone spots of Safa and Marwah in seven lengths.

The ritual is meant to copy the desperate walks of Hagar, wife of Ibrahim, who was seeking water for her infant Ishmael after he left them in the barren spot.

Saudi statistics revealed on Tuesday that a total of 1,799,601 pilgrims from outside Saudi Arabia and 989,798 from inside the country made the hajj this year, making a total of 2,789,399.

The increase was most likely due to a flood of pilgrims without permits. Authorities on Sunday put the number of permits issued to Saudis and citizens of other Gulf states at just 200,000.

On Monday, the hajj peaked with the assembly of all pilgrims in the plain of Arafat, where Prophet Mohammed is believed to have delivered his final sermon, on a hill in the plain known as Mount Arafat, or the Mount of Mercy.

No major incidents have so far been registered, a pay-off for Saudi investments in expanding infrastructure at the sacred sites.

The stoning ritual at the Jamarat was marked in the past by deadly stampedes, with hundreds trampled to death in several incidents.

To control the crowds, Saudi authorities built a five-level structure around the three sites, allowing a smooth flow of pilgrims.

The complex stands like a car park in the middle of the barren valley that is surrounded by rocky hills.

Pilgrims who are in a hurry will leave by on Thursday afternoon, after they finish their stoning rituals and a farewell circumambulation of the Kaaba. Others stay for a further day.

Some Virtues of Hajj and Umrah

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Umrah is an expiation for the time between it and the previous ‘Umrah’ and an accepted Hajj has no less a reward than Paradise”. (Narrated by al-Bukhari 1683, Muslim 1349).

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “He who performs Hajj and does not speak obscenely or commit evil then he returns just as the day his mother gave birth to him” (Narrated by Bukhaari, Ahmed, Nasai and Ibn Majah from Abu Hurairah).

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “There is no day on which Allah frees more of His slaves from Fire than the Day of Arafah.” (Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu’minin).

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was asked which deed is the best? He said, “Belief in Allah and His messengers. He was asked, then what? He said, Jihad for the sake of Allah. He was asked, then what? He said, Hajj Mabrour (an accepted Hajj).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari 26).

Types (Nusuk) of Hajj are Three:

Hajj Ifrad: The pilgrim pronounces intention to perform only Hajj.

Hajj Qiran: The pilgrim pronounces niyyah (intention) of performing both Hajj and Umrah simultaneously with the same Ihram and actions like Tawaaf and others. Or the pilgrim pronounces Umrah first then adds intention of Hajj on it before starting Tawaaf. Actions to be done by Mufrid and Qarin are the same, but Qarin is under an obligation to offer an animal sacrifice while Mufrid is under no obligation to do so.

Hajj Tamattu: The pilgrim pronounces intention to perform only Umrah during the Hajj months (Sahwwal, Dhul-Qidah and the first eight days of Dhul-Hejjah). The pilgrim performs Umrah and then abandons Ihram after Umrah. And all which was unlawful in the state of Ihram is now lawful such as usual garments and intercourse with the spouse until the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah arrives. On this day, the pilgrim pronounces intention from the place of residence in Makkah for the performance of the rites of Hajj.(This type is the most recommended).

Method of Hajj

1-Start it From Al Meeqat:

(For a man): Take off all the stitched garments to have a bath as you would do after sexual intercourse and perfume your head and beard with the best oil you can find –there is no harm in what remains of it after Ihram. Don’t perfume the Ihram garments.

Wear yourself from below the chest with white fabric (izar) and drape another piece over your two shoulders (ridaa) except in every Tawaaf, the right shoulder should be exposed.

(For a woman): Ihram is her customary stitched garments. She avoids wearing perfume or the type of dress which attracts attention. She isn’t abiden by a certain color.Pray the prescribed prayer if its stated time is on. And then offer two Rakats (Units) of prayer as a Sunnah act of Ihram. (There is no harm if you don’t pray it).

Then if you ride the car, intend the Nusuk and then say according to your Nusuk:

1- If you want to perform Umrah only, you say: “Labbaika Umrah” which means: I intend to perform Umrah”.

2- If you want to perform Hajj only (Ifrad) you say: “Labbaika Hajjan”. Which means: “I intend to perform Hajj”.

3- If you want to perform Hajj and Umrah together in their actions, you say: “Labbaika Omratan Mutamattean biha ilal-Hajj” which means: “I intend to perform Hajj and Umrah”.

4- If you want to perform Hajj and Umrah in the actions of Hajj (Qiran), you say: “Labbaika Omratan wa Hajjan”.

There is no need to repeat these utterences three times but only one time is enough.

Notes:

1. Each Nusuk (type) has its own benefit.

2. There are variances between them in intention, utterances and actions.

3. The best: Tamattu, then Ifrad, then Qiran.

4. For (Qiran): A female pilgrim needs it if she wants her Ihram as Mutamatt’eh and she couldn’t accomplish her Umrah incase her menses comes as well as for the one who comes late and fears missing standing in Arafat;also, who is detained to enter the Holy House for any reason.

If you fear that anything may detain you from completing your rites due to sickness or regulation procedures, you can make your intention conditioned in state of Ihram by saying:

“Allaahumma Mahallee Haithu Habastanee”

which means: “O Allah my place is wherever you prevent me”. But if you don’t fear any thing, it is not permitted to make your intention conditioned. Its benefit is: If you are prevented by any obstacle, you are excused legally to terminate your Ihram and return and you are not charged with an expiation.

Then you start Talbiyah:

“Labbaika Allahumma, Labbaik, Labbaika laa shareeka laka labbaik. Innal-Hamda wanni’mata laka wal mulk La shareeka lak”.

Which means: Here I am, O Allah, here I am, there is no partner for you, Here I am! Surely, all praise and blessings are for you and dominion is Yours. There is no partner for you.

A man raises his voice when saying it and a woman says it so that only one beside her may hear her).

Then head for the Hajr-Al-Aswad (the sacred Black Stone) to start Tawaaf (circling it). Touch it with your right hand and kiss it. If you can not kiss it, it is enough to touch it by your hand only. If you can’t do so, touch it by a stick or another thing and don’t kiss it. If it is not possible, make a sign towards it by your right hand without kissing it.

You had better not push Mutamereen (visitors of the Holy Mosque) and crowd to get it. Keep the Kaaba on you left side. In the meantime, you should drape the upper cloth (Ridaa) over the left shoulder and leave right shoulder exposed which is called in Arabic (Idtiba). And say whenever you reach the Black Stone:”Bismillahe wallahu Akbar”. Or “Allahu Akbar” only. It is good for you to purify yourself by bathing, perfuming and wearing a two –piece unstitched clean white garment. And then intend for Hajj and say: “labbaika Hajjan”. Which means: “I am here for Hajj”. Then you say “Labbaika Allahumma Labbaika, Labbaika la Shareeka laka labbaik, innal Hamda Wanni’mata Laka Wal Mulk, Laa Shareeka Lak”.
Actions to be Done on the 9th Day of Dhul Hejjah:

The standing (wuqoof) in ArafatThe standing (wuqoof) in Arafat is one of the most fundamental rites of Hajj and the prophet PBUH said:

“al Hajj Arafah”. Which means: “Hajj is Arafah”.

Its time:

a) The best: from the afternoon till after the sunset.

b) The permissible: from the dawn of the 9th day till the down of the 10th day. If you have spent even a few minutes in Arafat, your Hajj is correct. But if your attendance occurs before the sunset only, you are charged for a compensatory animal. Even these minutes take place after sunset, you are not charged with an expiation, but you have missed sleeping in Muzdalefah. In this case, you are charged for an animal for Muzdalefah and not for Arafat.

Soon after the sunrise, leave for Arafat and perform Dhuhr and Asr prayers (combined and shortened during the time of Dhuhr with one Athan/Adhan and two Iqaamahs – and stay there until the sunset. Invoke Allah as much as you can and it is from Sunnah to face Al-Qibla during supplication and not facing the Mountain of Arafat. It is preferred to say this supplication: “Laa ilaaha illaallahu Wahdahu laa Shareeka lahu- lahul mulku wa lahul hamd- Wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shai’en qadeer”.
All of Arafat is a place for standing. Ascending the mountain of Arafat in not permitted. It is preferable to invoke much supplication. It is not necessary to keep standing or say under the sun, you are free to sit and to be sheltered.

Leaving Arafat for Muzdalefah:a) When the sun has set, go to Muzdalefah. When reaching it, pray Maghrib and Isha (combined and shortening the Isha prayer to two Rak’ah with one Adhan and two Iqamahs) before reclining and collecting pebbles.b) Stay overnight in Muzdalefah to perform the prayer of Fajr (down prayer) and keep busy supplicating waiting for the brightness of the morning is widespread. (Sleeping in Muzdalefah is compulsory) but weak individuals and women are allowed to proceed to Mena at any time after midnight, after the moon has completely disappeared to avoid the crowd.

c) Collect seven pebbles for stoning the Jamarat – ul Aqaba (a stone pillar in Mena). Any place you collect pebbles from is permissible.

d) Leave for Mena before the sun rises.

It is Sunnah to go to Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah at any convenient time with the intention of visiting the Prophet’s Masjid (Mosque) and to pray in it as prayers performed in this Mosque are rewarded by a thousand folds over prayers observed in any other mosques save except the Sacred Mosque, according to Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH).

It should be noted that there is neither Ihram or Talbiyah for visiting the prophet’s Mosque and no connection whatsoever between this visit and Hajj. If you perform Hajj without visiting the Prophet’s Mosque, your Hajj is correct.

When you enter the Prophet’s Mosque, enter with your right foot first, saying in the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful and evoking blessing on His Prophet (PBUH) and Ask Allah to open the gates of His mercy for you. The recommended words for entering any mosque including the Prophet’s Mosque are: “Audhu billah – ila-dheem wa wajhi hil-kareem, wa sultanihil –qadeem mina Al-shaytan Al-Rajeem. Allaahumma Iftah li abwaba rahmatik”.Which means “I seek refuge in Allah the Al-mighty, and in His noble countenance and in His eternal power, from Satan the Rejected. Allah, open to me the doors of Your Mercy”.

Perform two Rakats (units) of Tahiyyat Al-Masjid (the salaat of Greetings of the Mosque) If this prayer is in Rawdha (the space between the Prophet’s grave and his pulpit in his Masjid), it would be preferable or in any place in the Mosque.

Then go to the tomb of the prophet (may peace and blessings be on him). Stand in front of it uttering politely with the low voice: “Assalamu ‘alaika, ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuku”, sallallahu alayka wa jazak an ummatika khair al-jaza”.Which means: “Peace be upon you, O Prophet and the mercy and blessings of Allah, and call for the blessings of Allah on him. May Allah reward you on behalf of your Ummah (people) with the best of rewards”.

Then step forward to your right hand to face the grave of Abu Baker and say: “Assalamu alaika ya aba Bakr Khalifata Rasul Allah Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam warahmat Allah wabarakatuha.
It is also Sunnah to visit the graves of al-Baqi cemetery and the grave of Uthman (May Allah be pleased with him) and the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud and the grave of Hamza (May Allah be pleased with him); to greet them and to pray for the mercy of Allah upon them where you say: “Assalamu alaikum ahlal-diyar minil-mumineen wal-muslimeen wa inna insha-Allah bikum lalaheqoon. Nasalal –Laha Lana wa lakumul-affiyah”.

Which means : (Peace be upon you, O dweller of this place from among the believers and the Muslims, and we will in Shaa Allah join you. We ask Allah for security from the Fire of Hell for us and for you).

Note:

There are no other mosques or places in Madinah, which are to be visited. Therefore, do not burden yourself by visiting places for which there is no reward or for which, in fact, there might be some blame for doing so.

By this, the hand book has been concluded.

At the end, I ask Allah that this hand book to be of great benefit and make it with sincerity.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia refuse entry to over 1,000 Nigerian women Hajj pilgrims because they were not accompanied by men.

ABUJA – Saudi Arabia has refused entry to over 1,000 Nigerian women Hajj pilgrims because they were not accompanied by men, Nigerian officials said on Wednesday.
The women had began arriving on Sunday at the airport in Jeddah, in western Saudi Arabia, said a report compiled by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, which oversees Nigerian participation in the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
“Upon enquiries by the reception team officials of the National Hajj Commission in the airport, they were told that the pilgrims were held back because of lack of mahram (lawful male accompanying pilgrim),” said the report, which was submitted to the Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.
About 171 of the women returned to Nigeria on a flight on Wednesday, an official said.
“These women were not deported. They were returned based on the decision by the National Hajj Commission because the embarrassment from the Saudi authorities was becoming unbearable,” commission spokesman Umar Bala said.
Bilateral talks were ongoing between officials of the two countries to resolve the issue, he added. He said that about 1,000 women were still stuck at Jeddah airport.
Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on Wednesday set up a five-member team to deal with the Saudi authorities “over the issues surrounding the detained Nigerian female pilgrims at King Abdul-Azziz international airport, Jeddah”, an official statement said.
According to the report presented to parliament, Nigerian pilgrims’ welfare boards have in the past acted as “mahrams” and visas had been granted on that basis.
The report said that officials observed that flights which arrived at the Medina airport were not subjected to such treatment.
“Only those in Jeddah were affected. Checks at the Jeddah airport revealed that only Nigerian pilgrims were subjected to such treatment,” the report said.
Last year, nearly three million Muslim pilgrims performed the Hajj, which represents one of the five pillars of Islam and must be performed at least once in a lifetime by all Muslims who are able to do so.
Roughly half of Nigeria’s 160 million people are Muslim. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation.

MECCA – Saudi Arabia’s religious police keep such a low profile during the haj, it’s hard to imagine that you are in Islam’s holiest city.

The kingdom, where Islam first emerged around 1,400 years ago, applies a strict form of Sunni Islamic sharia law that imposes gender segregation, forces shops to close during prayer times and prohibits women from driving.

But in Mecca, the enforcement of many of these rules is relaxed during the haj, a duty for every able-bodied Muslim. And with the government investing billion of dollars in recent years to make pilgrimage safer and more comfortable, many pilgrims end up going home as goodwill ambassadors for the country.

“We have to thank Saudi Arabia for their services. It’s getting better and better every year,” said Ritha Naji, a U.S. pilgrim performing a “stoning of the devil” rite that has been the scene of numerous deadly crushes in recent years.

The Grand Mosque, home to the Kaaba shrine which Muslims around the world turn to in prayer every day, is the only place in the desert kingdom where women and men can pray together.

Western diplomats say this tolerance is part of wider efforts to improve the country’s image over the past decade after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington in which Saudis were involved.

King Abdullah has tried hard to dispel the association between Saudi Arabia and lslamist militancy, promoting an international “interfaith dialogue” through the United Nations.

The 2010 haj drew a record 1.8 million foreigners from diverse regions of the world like Nigeria, Russia and Indonesia that apply a less strict form of Islam than Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. ally often comes under fire from human rights groups criticising its public beheadings and lack of political freedoms in what is an absolute monarchy.

But during haj Egyptians, Indians or Pakistanis — who make up the bulk of millions of expatriates in the country — receive markedly kinder treatment from Saudi officials who refer to pilgrims as “guests of the Merciful”, meaning God.

Polite policemen guide pilgrims around the vast Grand Mosque, while the religious police turn a blind eye to pilgrims taking the kinds of photographs that they had frowned on in previous years.

In the capital Riyadh religious police scour the streets to keep unrelated men and women apart, but in Mecca the sexes mix easily in shops and restaurants. Some eat side-by-side on the ground in front of the Grand Mosque, an impossible sight elsewhere in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia’s minority Shi’ites often complain of discrimination and attacks by Wahhabi clerics, yet during haj Iranian, Iraqi and other Shi’ites perform the rites unhindered.

Loudspeakers give instructions to the multitude in many languages, including English and Farsi, as well as Arabic.

SAFE HAJ IS KEY TO SAUDI PRESTIGE

As pilgrim numbers shot up over the past three decades, staging a safe haj became crucial for the image of a monarchy that styles its king Custodian of the Two Holy Sites — a reference to the sacred precincts in Mecca and in Medina where the Prophet Mohammad set up the first Muslim administration.

A series of disasters have claimed hundreds of lives during haj since 1990, including fires, stampedes, hotel collapses and clashes between police and pilgrims staging political protests.

This year the government unveiled a haj train linking the holy sites in and around Mecca that cost $1.8 billion to build. It will only be used some six days a year.

“We want to give pilgrims the best possible level of services,” Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz told reporters last week.

Thanks to its oil wealth, Saudi Arabia can afford to waive the fees for the services it provides, including drinking water, toilet facilities, medical and security services, as well as maintenance and expansion of the Grand Mosque itself.

Cold water is on tap at every corner and medics turn up within minutes when someone collapses. Saudi firms distribute umbrellas as protection from the sun.

The plain of Arafat, where pilgrims spend a whole day according to the rites, has a vast sprinkler system covering an area of some 1.3 sq km (0.5 square miles).

“The Saudi services for pilgrims are really good. One has to say that,” said Mohammed Idam, a Yemeni cooling under the spray in the afternoon heat at Arafat.

The efforts pay off in the positive message many pilgrims take home with them.

“Our Saudi brothers have expanded many services,” said Moroccan pilgrim Mohammed Hamdush.

“Now they’ve built a train for pilgrims, which is nice.”
